Strangford Lough is a unique place to visit at any time of the year, and in spring there’s a wide variety of wildlife to be found by the shore or in the wider countryside.
A sunken galleon, friendly sharks and a snappy crocodile all-star in Northern Ireland’s only aquarium and seal rehabilitation centre. Visitors to Exploris Aquarium in Portaferry will be wowed with a diver’s view of marine life from around the world.
The current Castle Ward is a particularly unusual building, famed for having been built with two completely opposing decorative styles. One half is built in the classical Palladian style, with the other half which faces out across Strangford lough is built in the more elaborate Gothic style.
Carved from the County Down landscape, the garden has grown from the 19th century beginnings of the Reverend John Moore and his nephew Hugh Armytage Moore. Their vision helped create a place where you can leave the outside world behind and immerse yourself in nature’s beauty.
The garden at Mount Stewart is unique and of rare quality, being one of the few late compartmentalised Arts and Crafts-like gardens. It is a deeply personal garden, the creation of Edith, Lady Londonderry in the early 20th century building on a pre-existing historic 18th and 19th century landscape.
Murlough Beach/Nature Reserve
Murlough National Nature Reserve is a fragile 6000 year old sand dune system owned by the National Trust and managed as Ireland’s first Nature Reserve since 1967. It is an excellent area for walking and bird watching due to its spectacular location at the edge of Dundrum Bay and the Mourne Mountains.

The Crown Liquor Saloon
